A panel discussion on NPR of the film version of Pullman's Lyra Silvertongue novels (The Golden Compass) grappled with the question of whether the film was anti-Christian. Well, yes, if you want to look at it that way. This book leaves that question alone, while, as you say, grappling with the contradictions and uncertainties of the Bible. But it's more respectful of believers than those novels, even going so far as positing a rational if far-fetched explanation of how the whole thing got going. (I've never gotten over the fact that a Catholic priest on that panel admitted, in attempting to answer a question about Pullman's anti-church stance, that he'd never read the books. As I was picking up the phone to rant, a fellow panelist took him to task for me. Most satisfying!)jaylynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05031950153866444587noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2942020310450458090.post-26776062353937718662013-12-31T09:47:21.142-05:002013-12-31T09:47:21.142-05:00Some of the things that bring me joy are books, do...Some of the things that bring me joy are books, double crostic puzzles, and early music. Here's a question for you (or for James Adams): what if a particular creed/credo isn't something you are the least bit interested in setting your heart on, or trusting in, or longing for?

I guess I tend to see creeds as inherently political as opposed to religious or spiritual in nature. To my mind, any religion that values or promotes freedom of conscience has no business incorporating a creed into its liturgy, even if it's only there for the purposes of honoring a tradition.
